Important considerations before moving abroad

Moving abroad: how to proceed

Moving abroad is a huge step. Regardless of whether you are moving to a new location as an employee of a company, reorienting yourself privately or emigrating permanently and thus fulfilling a long-cherished lifelong dream. Of course, moving abroad is not entirely stress-free, as you will be faced with new cultures, various administrative procedures and sometimes a language you are not yet entirely familiar with. At least we can make the move itself as stress-free as possible for you - our expertise, experience and international network will work to your advantage.

Health insurance abroad: What should I bear in mind?

What do I need to consider before moving abroad?

First of all, of course, you need to clarify things yourself. Where do you want to go? When do you want or need to move? Moving abroad within the EU is relatively straightforward, as European freedom of movement guarantees this. The situation is different if you are moving to the USA or the United Arab Emirates, for example. In this case, you will need to familiarise yourself in advance with the general conditions of entry and the visa application process.

You should also collect all important documents in advance, first and foremost your passport and, for example, notarised documents. A notarised birth and marriage certificate, for example, is necessary for moving to the United Arab Emirates. When planning your trip, bear in mind that the authorities in Germany are not always particularly fast. You should therefore collect all the necessary documents in good time so that there is no rush later on. Bear in mind that you may need to have the German documents for your entry into the country notarised.

You should also think about health insurance early on, as statutory health insurance will obviously not help you if you are moving and staying for a longer period of time. You should therefore find out which health insurance policies are offered in your destination country and which benefits are sometimes mandatory. You can also take out international health insurance in Germany, at least for temporary stays.

Professional relocation planning with experienced partners

Now it's time to plan the move abroad

The good news right from the start: we can look back on more than four decades of experience and can move your household safely from A to B - on international roads, by sea or by plane. Of course, this depends largely on your destination country. To ensure that everything runs smoothly, we maintain numerous co-operations on a global level. For your move abroad, we work closely with our international partners - who, like us, you can rely on for reliability, punctuality and careful handling of your furniture and smaller household items.

Personalised advice for a smooth process

It all starts with a personal consultation

With such a large project, it is essential to plan the exact procedure in detail and discuss it in advance. That's why our removal experts will first sit down with you and determine all the important details required for the move abroad.

For example, the type of packaging material plays a key role, especially if the household is being transported by sea or air. We take care of the official formalities that may arise when the household crosses the border. On the one hand, this ensures a smooth process, and on the other, we save you a lot of time and effort - so that you can concentrate fully on your new chapter in life in another country.

Of course, your furniture and other items are also insured, which is inevitably necessary for an international move. At this point, the experts at Maier will advise you on the type and scope of a policy that is the most cost-effective solution for you.

Interim storage - flexible and safely organised

Is temporary storage necessary when moving abroad?

Temporary storage can of course also occur for domestic removals, but tends to be somewhat less common than for cross-border removals. If you want or simply need temporary storage, this is of course no problem with us. We will show you the various options and then plan the delivery if you are already living abroad at the time.

How we support our customers when moving abroad

Our aim is to offer our customers everything from a single source. Regardless of whether you are moving within Europe or even to a completely different continent. We therefore offer you the following services, among others:

  • Provision of packing material suitable for international removals
  • Disassembly and reassembly of furniture at the old and new place of residence
  • Packing and unpacking cupboard and chest of drawers contents
  • Provision of overseas containers for removals by sea
  • LCL shipments suitable for small and groupage shipments
  • We take care of the administrative formalities and obtain the necessary transport authorisations.

Did you already know? We handle both private and commercial removals. For example, if you are an international company moving employees from Germany to a new location abroad, we will be happy to plan the associated removals with you.

On the sea route, a distinction is often made between two container sizes. In most cases, a 20-foot container is sufficient for the household of a 4-room flat. For particularly large households or commercial removals, there are also 40-foot containers.

Further tips for your move abroad

For obvious reasons, moving abroad is generally more expensive than moving within Germany. You can optimise the costs incurred by clearing out and mucking out beforehand. For example, you could have items or furniture that you no longer need collected from bulky waste or try to sell them. If fewer items have to be transported across national borders, this will be reflected in a lower price.

It's best to always have the most important things with you. After all, it's not just your furniture that has to be moved, you also have to get to your new home. You should therefore consider early on what you need to have to hand quickly during the moving phase. On the one hand, these are of course important personal and official documents that you will need for your own entry. On the other hand, you should also put together a first-aid kit. This will contain some medicines, for example for stomach aches or headaches. However, find out in advance whether you are allowed to take the relevant German medication with you to your destination country.

You should also submit a redirection request to the post office. This does not cost a lot of money, but ensures that no mail gets lost. For example, you can specify the date of your move in your redirection order. But remember: at your new place of residence, the letterbox must of course already be labelled with your name.

Prepare for your new place of residence - we'll take care of the move abroad!

In general, it is of course advisable to familiarise yourself with the culture, customs and language of your destination country at an early stage. If you are moving for professional reasons, your employer may support you in this. Your language skills should at least be sufficient for basic communication at the beginning. Over time, however, you will gradually and almost automatically improve your language skills in the new country.

Moving abroad is always a big little adventure. And to a certain extent, that's the whole point. At the same time, we want to make sure that you can at least look forward to the move with peace of mind. Our many years of experience are just as much an advantage as our "door-to-door" principle. However, a move abroad should always be planned well in advance. We therefore recommend that you contact us directly, for example by e-mail, telephone or via our contact form. We can then organise your move abroad step by step.
